The Ethiopian portion of the Great Rift Valley is known to be one of the biggest bird sanctuaries in Africa. Each of the seven lakes in the valley have their own attractions, shelter various species of birds and many wild animals. The Rift Valley is also habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. The road East from Addis Ababa leads you to Debre-Zeit, an exotic small town with spectacular crater lakes. Then proceeding to Lake Ziway, the shallowest from the Rift Valley lakes, Lake Abijata and Shalla National Park is an ideal place for bird watching. A good place to witness crocodiles in on the shores of Lake Chamo, South from the town of Arba Minch, at a place popularly referred to as the “AZZO GEBEYA” or crocodile market. This spot offers one of Africa`s most impressive displays of big crocodiles, large number of hippopotamus and a variety of birds.

Christmas is also one of the biggest ceremonies which fall on 7 January.The celebration of Timket or Epiphany, on the 19 January is probably the biggest festival of the year.
